Executive Summary:
In most African communities’ mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse are not given the same attention as other diseases are. For instance, in most communities the mentally ill are considered to be bewitched and therefore do not require modern medicine treatments. Most healthcare facilities that take care of people that suffer from these diseases are located in urban settings and are not easily accessible by the rural populations.
A holistic treatment approach that considers the provision of care to patients that is based on a mutual understanding of their physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions is the approach DODFI’s program will implement.
This will include the following: a) Patient-Centered Care, b) Respect for patient preferences, c) Coordination and integration of care, d) Information and education, e) Physical comfort, f) Emotional support, g) Involvement of family and friends, h) Continuity and transition and i) Access to medical care.
